Napa BMX 7/2/16

Since the last post we've done two Wednesday night races and today's (Saturday) race. There were no races last week due to the state races in Roseville.

I may need to do these entries at least weekly because I can hardly remember what happened the last two Wednesdays. Nothing too eventful! Anthony probably had a couple of thirds, and I believe Gianluca had a third and a fourth. But he still got a trophy for fourth. Don't know why.

Anyway, today we had some great racing in the five and under novice class! There were 5 riders; three 5 year olds (Colton, Elaina, and Naomi), and two 4 year olds (Anthony and Hannah). This is the first time that it hasn't been a three rider grid in a while, so I told Anthony that he was gonna have to do well to be sure to make it to the main.

Colton got a new 20" mini, and it suited him much better, so he was actually going faster than Anthony in practice. Anthony got a mediocre start, but something weird that we didn't see happened in the first bowl turn, and Anthony emerged in second place not too far behind Colton. Elaina was surprisingly a ways back so I think she must have had a little hiccup in the bowl turn, or on the incline coming out of it. Anthony closed the gap on Colton in the last half of the lap and was looking like he'd pass him. It didn't quite happen though, and they finished almost side by side advancing straight to the main.

Anthony got another mediocre start in the main, and may have been in fourth going into the first bowl. He came out of the bowl in third in pursuit of Elaina and Colton who were battling for the lead. Colton took the lead gong into the second bowl turn, and Anthony closed the gap getting right behind the other two. Colton and Elaina were almost side by side going down the last whoops, and Anthony swung over to the large whoops perhaps thinking that he may be able to overtake them. Unfortunately hitting the large whoops is definitely the slower line for these small guys so his strategy didn't prevail this time. However, he did end up entering the last bowl turn right on Elaina's back wheel, and he made a good effort to push ahead. It didn't work out for him this time, but he put in a great race against the two five year olds on 20" bikes. Being on the 20" bike definitely makes a difference. As I said in the last post, I think it's Anthony's time to move up!!!

Oh yeah, and Gianluca got to meet Donny- and ride with him. Anthony got some laps in with Donny too!

Great race Anthony!! You make your daddy very proud!
