As he adored his trophies all week (he slept with his first place trophy on Wednesday night after Danny asked him if he'd slept with it yet). But he also noticed that he didn't have a second place trophy, and he told me that he needed to get a second place trophy. I kinda let it go and of course just looked forward to him potentially winning again on Saturday.
Saturday comes around and we head out to the track. There was a very light turnout this week, but the 5 and under Novice class had four entries: Anthony, Naomi, Skyler, and a new 5 year old boy. Anthony gets a better start this week, but still has to come from behind for the win. He's clearly the fastest rider out there. So, since there are four riders this is a normal qualifier (not total points like last week with only three entries); Anthony advances to the main and doesn't have to (get to) race in the second moto. This is a new concept to him, and I thought that he'd be upset, but he seemed to understand and just went with it. I told him that his next race would be the main event, and that that race would be where he could win a trophy.
When the main event gets called Anthony is ready to race, but he's much more calm than he normally is (he's amazingly composed at the track for any kid; especially a four year old). He actually got a decent start this time, but ended up behind Skyler heading down the middle straightaway. She had a decent gap, but nothing that he wasn't able to close. Surprisingly he maintained the same gap all the way to the finish. He finished second.
I of course tried to show as much enthusiasm as I had for last week's win (I'd learned a couple of hard lessons with Alessandra by doing otherwise), and I greeted him at the finish with a nice high 5 and a hug. But I had to ask him what had happened, and why he didn't try to catch Skyler.
He pretty much said that he was going for second. He needed to have a second place trophy to complete the full set.
I think I believe him!!
Oh well. let's see what happens next time.
It was another fun day at the track with my little man.
He says that he likes his 1st place trophy best!!
Until next time......
